Project Overview
In the summer of 2011, the University of Arizona approached Freedom Chemical Corporation regarding the elevated space above their basketball arena, the McKale Center. This area experiences a high volume of foot traffic every year during the basketball season. As a result, the current topcoat was showing serious signs of discoloration and loss of non-skid properties. The University of Arizona wanted to coat over the existing polyurea waterproofing membrane with high-abrasion-resistant and UV-resistant solutions to withstand high foot traffic and exposure to Arizona’s intense sunlight.
Application
IPW was selected to expertly apply the FreedomTuff systems. The area was cleaned with high-pressure (3000 psi) water wash and degreaser, followed by shot blasting to degloss and provide a bondable surface for recoat applications. The FreedomTuff 6160 Epoxy Primer was used at a rate of 200 sq. ft. / gallon and diluted with 20% acetone to ensure optimum adhesion to the substrate in the evenings. A 30 mesh washed rounded aggregate was broadcast in the FT 6160 Epoxy Primer before cure at a rate of 0.25 lbs per sq. ft. In the early morning, to avoid the direct July sunlight and heat, the FreedomTuff Grip Seal Grey was applied at a rate of 100 sq. ft. / gallon.
Results
After 12 full summers in the Arizona sun, the gripseal grey coatings showed no signs of discoloration or premature wear. Having gone through two basketball seasons with the foot traffic and small vehicular traffic, the non-skid properties remain the same as they were on day one, proving the durability of the system and its application.
