Project Overview
The Humanities Hall at UC Irvine, built in 1963, is one of the campus’s original buildings. The structure includes over 20 classrooms, lecture halls, a theater space, faculty and departmental offices, and a computer lab. The university conducted a seismic evaluation, identifying major deficiencies related to safety, accessibility, and urgent deferred maintenance. The complete restoration project included the Podium Deck, the subject of this case study.
Application
As the subcontractor on this project, IPW was responsible for the restoration and waterproofing of the Humanities Hall podium deck. A FreedomTuff system was selected to provide long-lasting protection of the space, which included 35,000 sq ft of product. The project involved the precise application of four products: an epoxy primer, a polyurea protective coating. 28,000 SF was covered with ½” drain mat followed by the installation of 2-3” mortar bed and finished with paver tiles. Other areas that remain visible received a waterproofing polyurethane intermediate layer finished with Polyaspartic UV-resistant topcoat at locations not covered by tile. The combination of these products delivered long-lasting and durable abrasion and chemical resistance, as well as color and gloss retention, with durable installations that had no odor.
Results
Working efficiently and safely, the IPW team delivered the project ahead of schedule and under budget. The newly coated podium deck enhanced both appearance and durability, providing a finish built to withstand heavy foot traffic and exposure to the elements for years to come.
