Project Overview
Below the concrete grandstand of the 100-year-old Riverside Community College’s Wheelock Stadium, are occupied spaces including training rooms, lockers, offices and laundry. The structure required major concrete restoration, including epoxy injection and sealant installation, before any coatings could be installed. The solution needed to be durable, long-lasting, quick return to service system to restore and protect the concrete grandstands of their multi-use arena. Since the school was occupied at the time of the restoration, a no-odor solution was critical during application.
Application
IPW selected Freedom Chemical’s GuardianST™ to provide long-lasting protection for the multi-use area of the stadium. The combination of the products provided excellent thermal stability, abrasion and chemical resistance, color and gloss retention, durable installations with no odor, and fast return to service. Preparation included the removal of all coatings and caulking, including spalled or damaged concrete. The concrete was repaired using fast-cure epoxy mortars, urethane sealants, and epoxy injection to restore the design integrity of the structure. Once the preparation was completed, the Polyurea waterproofing system was installed using Freedom FT 6160, a two-component 100% solids epoxy primer, in combination with Freedom FT 1095 tape over all joints and cracks. Next, Freedom FT 2190 was applied at 90 mils to provide an elastomeric protective coating that is flexible, abrasion-resistant, and impact-resistant. Afterward, Freedom Chemical’s Freedom Tuff 4300 intermediate layer 100% solids two-component hand-applied aromatic polyurethane with non-skid aggregate. The system was completed using Freedom FT 4000 Polyaspartic topcoat.
Results
Freedom’s Polyurea system is an integral part of the restoration, allowing Wheelock Stadium to enter its second century of service using 21st-century materials and methods to improve the durability, and longevity of the grandstand exterior.
