Job Description
Secondary containment – geo fabric

Products Used

  • FreedomTuff™ 2202 Polyurea

Project Overview
In 2017, the Bureau of Reclamation was installing new electrical substations at Davis Dam in Arizona. The sub-stations are used to collect and distribute power generated at the dam. The transformers for the substations hold PCB oil for cooling the transformers, so a secondary containment was required in case the units leaked. Exposure to extreme temperature swings and chemical resistance to the oils were special considerations for the coating selection.

Application
IPW selected Freedomtuff™ 2202 polyurea as the membrane because its physical properties provide flexibility across the varying temperature ranges commonly found in the desert. The membrane would have to be installed over loose soil, so a 16-oz geo fabric was used as a substrate. Then Freedomtuff™ 2202 polyurea was applied at 100 mils. Per Freedoms’ recommendations, ¼” keyways were installed in areas where the lining terminated at concrete walls or berms. Consideration was given to the rapid and extreme temperature swings, and appropriate slack was left to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the coating system.

Results
The selection of the Freedomtuff 2202 polyurea over the geofabric resulted in a durable and seamless secondary containment membrane for the owners. The system has seen 6 full summers of Arizona’s extreme temperatures and has shown no signs of premature failure.

It was really fun getting to know the team during the project. They were all helpful in answering my questions and made me feel completely at ease. The design ended up being twice as good as I could have ever envisioned!
