Project Overview
A ride in the amusement park featured a metal deck with cars running over the top, causing extreme wear due to ridecar sheer conditions from urethane wheels. The client required a decorative, non-skid, high-abrasion, and corrosion-resistant protective system with a fast turnaround, especially after the first epoxy system, which had already been applied, showed significant signs of wear in just 2 days of demoing the ride.
Application
Containment Tents were erected to provide privacy and stable ambient conditions. Dehumidifiers were used on both the top and bottom sides of the steel plates to avoid flash rust and cold wall effect. The existing coating was removed using steel shot and terminators, and the steel deck was blasted using 60% steel shot rounds and 40% angular grit to achieve a 4- 6 mils profile. FreedomTuff 5145 polyurea joint sealer was used in the bolt holes and expansion joints. FreedomTuff 2202 polyurea was applied at 80 mils. FreedomTuff stonegrip was applied at 24 mils, and a custom color quartz was broadcast to excess in the stonegrip to refusal. Finally, 15 mils of Gripseal clear was applied as a lock coat to provide additional wear properties.
Results
IPW’s composite system was the only one of the five system options that provided extended use between maintenance cycles. The finished system provided the decorative look the client desired, while also meeting the non-skid and corrosion-resisting requirements for high foot traffic. The client was “very impressed” with the wear and abrasion resistance, as well as the fast turnaround.
