Project Overview
It’s been a century since the Bolsa Chica Wetlands were truly a “wetland”, with an abundance of wildlife and a natural environment. Innovative Painting & Waterproofing was brought on to help phase the 200-acre muted tidal basin back into life.
Application
Kiewit Pacific Company hired Innovative Painting and Waterproofing Inc. to repair, grout, and install polyurea in confined culverts, working under strict time constraints and tidal challenges. The team removed deteriorated sealants and patching materials, cleaned and ground joints, and cut keyways for membrane termination. Voids behind the concrete and in precast joints were filled using high-pressure injection of Polycoat’s PCGrout II, followed by priming, backer installation, and joint sealing with Polycoat’s Series 21 Epoxy Primer. A final 150-mil layer of Series 5502 Aromatic Polyurea, reinforced with geotextile fabric, was applied over all precast joints to provide a flexible joint seal to accommodate soil movement from the wetlands’ water and shifting sand conditions. Operating in confined spaces with constant air monitoring, Innovative deployed dual trailer-mounted Graco Fusion Reactors, two full polyurea crews, and support staff, working around the clock to meet critical deadlines.
Results
When the gates were finally opened, tides flowed, and the choice of polyurea as the membrane system proved to be successful. As the oil fields phase out, a natural habitat will be restored to resemble the conditions of the early 1900s. In the case of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, “this place is for the birds”…in a good way.
