Project Overview
In 2020, Corporate Point wanted to recoat the two main cooling tower basins that service the 10-building campus on 80 acres. Since the project was conducted during the heat of summer, they could not afford much downtime with any one unit. They needed a coating solution that minimized downtime and allowed them to stagger work on the two units without overloading the one that remained in operation. To meet these requirements, they chose Freedomtuff polyureas for their durability and fast return-to-service application.
Application
The area was cleaned with a high-pressure (5000 psi) water wash, which partially removed the existing epoxy coating. The remaining epoxy coatings were removed, and the concrete and abraded to provide CSP-3 surface profile using HEPA vacuum shrouded power tools. Freedomtuff 6160 epoxy primer was applied at 10 mils with 20-grit aggregate applied to the wet primer to allow for maximum mechanical adhesion. Freedomtuff 2202 was then applied at 100 mils.
Results
The client was able to shut down one unit at a time for only 3 days while the towers were prepped, primed, and sprayed with polyurea. This allowed for sufficient cooling of the 10-building campus during the work. When it was done, the client commented on how easy the Freedomtuff 2202 was to clean and that their maintenance and scheduled cleanings were a “piece of cake”!
