Project Overview
In 2017, the Orange County Sheriff’s needed to waterproof the inmate showers. Most of the showers were elevated and over occupied spaces that required a flexible and robust waterproofing system. Furthermore, when installing systems in a jail setting, special consideration must be given to the inmate’s ability to remove the protective coating and use it as a weapon, making a flexible system better than a rigid solution.
Application
The IPW team first prepped the tile using power tools, removing the glaze and providing a profile to ensure adequate adhesion. Next, they applied the FreedomTuff 6160 primer at 8–10 mils, followed by spraying the FreedomTuff 2190 SealFlex at 80–100 mils to provide a robust waterproofing membrane. To finish, the FreedomTuff 4000 Polyaspartic was applied at 14–16 mils with a light broadcast of non-skid added to the floor to meet ADA Slip and Fall requirements.
Results
Initially, the sheriff’s department was considering a very rigid glass-reinforced system to waterproof the showers. However, it was decided that a polyurea system would provide the long-term durability and protection needed without the concern of potential removal or misuse by inmates.
The performance of the Polyurea system exceeded expectations. As a result the polyurea flooring was used at Musick jail where 90,000 square feet of inmate barrack flooring and showers were coated by IPW in 2019.
