Project Overview
In November 2011, IPW and Freedom Chemical were awarded the bid to apply a polyurea flooring system in the new Los Angeles Police Department jail. The polyurea system was chosen for its durability, ease of cleaning, and fast return to service. Polyurea was selected to provide the durable protection needed in the harsh environment of a jail where inmates have plenty of time to tear things up.
Application
The jails were new construction with 28,000 square feet of concrete applied to the floors, and selected areas of walls and shower facilities. The surface was checked for excessive moisture vapor pressure before installation. Concrete was prepared to CSP-4 surface profile, followed by the application of FreedomTuff’s 6160 epoxy primer and FreedomTuff 2202 polyurea applied at 80 mils thick. A top coat of FreedomTuff 4000 polyaspartic topcoat was applied to provide the desired non-skid and color aesthetics.
Results
Freedom’s polyurea system provided a durable coating for jail and prison environments that was easy to clean, making it advantageous for sanitary reasons. The polyurea adhered flawlessly to the concrete, making it extremely difficult for the inmates to remove the coating. And if they did, the polyurea is too flexible to be used as a weapon.
