Project Overview
Every nine years, OSHA requires that this popular underwater ride be completely drained, giving the owner an opportunity to perform essential repairs. IPW was contracted during a maintenance cycle in 2006 to waterproof the expansion joints and cracks. The solution proved so effective that the owner extended the treatment to include the 50,000 square feet of walls and floors.
Application
Draining 6.3 million gallons of water was just the start. Significant surface preparation was also required, beginning with the removal of acrylic paint dating back to the 1950s, which was discovered to contain toxic metals. Once the concrete was exposed, IPW used a scabbler to grind away the surface, creating a CSP-7 ¼-inch profile. The surface was then parged coated with Rapid Set Cement All to level imperfections and create a suitable CSP-3 substrate profile. Before coatings were applied, moisture testing indicated a vapor drive of 10-12 pounds. These conditions required the application using 16-mil of FreedomTuff 6600 MVR epoxy; other areas with vapor drive less than 7 pounds were coated with 8–10 mils of FreedomTuff 6160 epoxy. The system was completed with the application of 100 mils DFT FreedomTuff 2245 CR polyurea, a high-chemical-resistant system, which was applied as the final protective layer to ensure long-term durability.
Results
The park owners were extremely pleased with the waterproofing results, recognizing the power of polyurea coatings for protecting, restoring, and waterproofing surfaces.
