Job Description
Protective Lining

Products Used

  • FreedomTuff 6160 Primer
  • FreedomTuff 2243 CR Polyurea

Project Overview
The Kimberly Clark plant in Fullerton, CA, needed a reliable lining system for its main clarifier, an essential part of the manufacturing process for Scott toilet paper. As a 24/7 facility that supplied much of the western U.S., downtime was a critical concern. IPW utilized a high-performance polyurea system to provide strong protection while minimizing downtime, thanks to its fast-curing properties.

Application
To ensure the best solution, a chemical test was conducted first to verify that the selected product, FreedomTuff 2243 CR Polyurea, would withstand the various chemicals present in the clarifier.
Once verified, the IPW team removed buildup from the concrete tanks with high-pressure water jetting. The damaged areas were then repaired with high-strength, fast-curing concrete, then washed and cleaned with a soluble salt remover to extract chlorides and sulfates within the concrete. To create the proper substrate, the concrete was sandblasted to achieve a CSP 3-4 profile. Followed by 1 coat of FreedomTuff 6160 epoxy primer, which was then applied at 8–10 mils. This system was completed with the application of 100-mils using FreedomTuff 2243-CR Polyurea. After the coating application was completed, high-voltage spark testing was performed to verify that the coating system was continuous, free of any holidays or pinholes, ensuring the new lining system would provide long-term performance.

Results
Thanks to IPW’s experience and efficiency, the clarifier was rapidly returned to service. The work was completed during a scheduled 6-day plant shutdown. Allowing the facility to reopen and operate around the clock. With its upgraded, durable lining, the clarifier would be shielded against water ingress, chemical attack, and mechanical stress for years to come.
